Vaccine Injuries
Vaccines can be tremendously effective at protecting us from illnesses, however they also have the potential to cause severe health-threatening side effects. If you recently were diagnosed with an illness as a result of a vaccine you took, it is important to speak with a personal injury lawyer about your case promptly.
Common Types of Vaccine Injuries
Different illnesses may be caused by different vaccines. For example,
- the COVID-19 vaccine may cause thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS), myocarditis/pericarditis, or Guillain-Barre Syndrome, among others;
- the Tetanus vaccine can cause tinnitus; and
- the Rabies vaccine can cause optic neuritis.
While these outcomes are uncommon, they are possible.
Vaccine Injury Support Program
The Vaccine Injury Support Program accepts applications from individuals in Canada who experienced a significant and lifelong vaccine caused injury.
The program offers you financial assistance if it's found that:
- You received a vaccine recommended by Health Canada, but you now have a serious and permanent injury as a result; and
- the vaccine was administered in Canada on or after December 8, 2020.
You will need a written opinion from a doctor that claims that your injury was, more likely than not, caused by the vaccine you were administered.
You may also be eligible for financial assistance if you were a beneficiary or dependent of someone who passed away following a vaccine.
Possible types of support may include:
- income replacement;
- payment for injuries;
- death benefits, including funeral expenses; and
- other eligible costs, such as uncovered medical expenses.
What to Do If You Were Injured as a Result of a Vaccine
If you suspect you are suffering from an adverse side effect from a vaccine you recently took, it is important to consult a doctor right away to discuss your concerns. Your doctor may ask you to undergo various blood or other medical tests to determine your diagnoses and may refer you to a specialist, depending on the type of injury you are experiencing.
Once you have a doctor’s opinion that your injury is the result of a vaccine you took, and that this injury is permanent and serious, you need to speak with a personal injury lawyer as soon as possible to help determine your options moving forward.
