Auto-Pedestrian Collision in North York Claims 10 Lives, Injures 13

A devastating, and unfortunately deliberate attack in North York, Ontario has claimed at least 10 lives, and left 13 victims in hospital with serious injuries.

On April 23, 2018, it is alleged that Alek Minassian intentionally plowed down pedestrians in a white van, leaving carnage and destruction in its wake. While the motive behind the attack has not yet been revealed by law enforcement, the City of Toronto has suffered an unfathomable loss, leaving an entire city in mourning. Witnesses described a grizzly scene, whereby Minassian drove a van onto the sidewalk in the Yonge Street and Finch Avenue area, hitting any pedestrian and object in his path.

The suspect attempted to flee the scene, however he was quickly stopped and apprehended by Toronto Police, who have been commended in their work bringing down Minassian alive. While the families of the victims are going through unimaginable turmoil at this time, the capture of Minassian will allow Toronto Police to ascertain further information from the suspect, and discern the motive behind this attack. Alek Minassian has been charged with 10 counts of first degree murder and 13 counts of attempted murder, and was remanded into custody.

While the usually busy North York intersection remains closed off by Toronto Police, the people of Toronto have demonstrated compassion and solidarity during this tragic time. A memorial has been erected near Yonge and Finch, the growing vigil filled with flowers, candles, and notes to the victims of the attack reminding them that Torontonians stand with them.

In a situation like this, those injured or the family of the people that have tragically died as a result of this horrific act may still be able to get the help they need through Statutory Accident Benefits.
